Hotel Review: Disappointing Stay at an Overrated Hotel

Don’t be tempted to book this hotel despite its high ratings. While the lobby and bar area are attractive, the housekeeping and maintenance issues made this one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve had in the past 20 years.

Our first room was on the fifth floor, and the hallway was filthy—paper pieces, dog hair, and even bits of toilet paper littered the area for three days before it was partially vacuumed (corners were still ignored). To make matters worse, housekeeping staff were shouting loudly on Saturday morning, disrupting any chance of a peaceful start to the day.

The bathroom in our room was equally frustrating. After running the shower for over 10 minutes, the water was only lukewarm at best. The toilet was another challenge—flushing required multiple attempts (sometimes over 8!) before it would fully clear. The door to the balcony was also problematic, as it required power to open and close, which was inconvenient and unreliable in both rooms we stayed in.

We raised our concerns with the front desk, but the explanations were unconvincing. They claimed the hot water issue was due to high demand, despite the hotel being in low occupancy during winter. They promised to send an engineer, and while the hot water improved slightly that evening, the same issue persisted the next morning.

After more complaints, we were moved to a lower-floor room. Unfortunately, the new room came with its own problems: the toilet clogged after one use, and even after it was unclogged, it still required multiple flushes to work. Maintenance was called yet again, but it became clear this was a systemic issue with the hotel’s plumbing and hot water supply.

It’s baffling how this hotel maintains such high ratings (9/10). The cleanliness, hot water, plumbing, and noise levels were far below acceptable standards. We would not recommend this hotel and certainly won’t be returning.

Let’s start with the good things! Ocean view from the room is amazing and the lobby/bar area downstairs was very nice and cute. Drinks were good! But for the price of the hotel (I went in early Sept), it was very disappointing. The pool area and chairs were dirty and stained (opposite of the photos shown online) and I didn’t see anyone outside on the patio or at the pool the whole weekend. If I wasn't at the beach, I was really looking forward to being outside with a cocktail, but alas. Also there were no large towels available to either cover the dirty lounge chairs or take to the beach. Maybe there's a security reason for this, but seems like a normal amenity for a beach hotel.

My room was dirty in areas like the little platform area between bed and the wall (hairs and dirt) and the room patio chairs were grimy as well. Seems odd the bathroom can be so clean, but other parts are ignored. The conditioner bottle was empty and hair dryer didn’t work. I had 2 loads of laundry from a previous work trip, only to find (after I inserted quarters!) the laundry soap dispenser was empty and/or broken. All of the things above seem like very easy fixes and minimum standards for a Moxy. 🙁

For dinner in the area, recommend Esoteric and Pink Dinghy. The neighborhood they were in was also very cute!

Fun vibe with fun atmosphere! Loved the old school video games and the Trapper Keeper drink list at the bar. The staff was awesome. The outdoor seating was very inviting but dirty seat cushions. We loved our room location and the fun balloons that were all over the room. The view from our patio was beautiful. The bed was comfortable. Very minimal with no closets or shelves. I was happy the room had mini fridge. The wast basket was dirty. Overall a very fun place to stay and great staff.

I visited VB for the first time and stayed at this Moxy with my dog. It was such a great experience! All of the staff were so friendly and helpful. The diner connected to the hotel was delicious for breakfast and an iced coffee in the morning. The location was great being right on the beach and within a mile of many restaurants. I appreciate how dog friendly, fun, and relaxed the environment was at the Moxy. We hope to return again soon!!

Great location, the amenities were great the rooms are VERY minimal...no drawers, no mini fridge, no sink in the bathroom...the sink is across from the bed. The lobby and pool were the best part of this hotel we made a room requested when we booked which was acknowledged, agreed but not guaranteed and when we got there we were told that they didn't see our request until we arrived so they couldn't accommodate us unless we took 2 rooms without the ocean view. Can't say we will return but the pool and slide are nice!

Amazing hotel! Fun vibe. The staff was so friendly. Close to everything and we had a beautiful view of the ocean from our room. Reasonably priced for everything you’re getting. The best part was there weren’t any kids!

Very cool & fun space but dirty. My bathroom reeked of urine which caused our whole room to smell of urine. Even after complaining to the front desk the smell was still very much present. I had to request that our hallway floor be vacuumed because noticeable debris was in the hallway…. since we checked in to well into the late afternoon of the next day. The bathroom in the lobby was also dirty. Smelled terrible. There was a stall that was used but couldn’t flushed. This issue was left unattained. No sign was put up to identify it as out of order. Although my kids loved the space given the fun ambiance … can’t say we’d return as I’m big on being in a clean space.

Our family recently enjoyed a vacation at the Moxy Hotel in Virginia Beach, and it has quickly become our favorite spot for a getaway. The hotel was not only impeccably clean, but the vibe was modern and fun, making it a perfect choice for a family trip. The decor and atmosphere of the hotel were inviting and stylish, adding to the overall experience.

The customer service at the Moxy Hotel was exceptional. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome from the moment we checked in. We did encounter a minor issue during our stay, but it was resolved promptly and professionally by Mr. Krogsund, the manager. His quick action and dedication to ensuring our comfort demonstrated the hotel’s high standards for guest service.

The hotel also offers various amenities that enhanced our stay. The lobby area was a great place to relax and socialize, and the convenience of on-site dining options made meals easy and enjoyable. The location is fantastic, with easy access to the beach and nearby attractions, adding to the appeal for families looking to explore the area.

Overall, we had the best time at Moxy Hotel and are already planning our next visit. It’s clear that this hotel has set a new standard for our family vacations, and we will definitely be seeking out Moxy Hotels in other destinations as well. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a unique and enjoyable hotel experience!
